Casamento's is a deceptively simple restaurant. Most of their customers, even the locals, come here because they are on a pilgrimage to find the best Louisiana oysters. Whether you eat 'em raw or fried, you will taste the best the city has to offer. The star attraction is the Oyster Loaf on Pan Bread. The bread is thicker, softer, and better than a French baguette, and it cradles perfectly fried oysters in a dusting of corn flour. Remarkably, Casamento's does not use deep fryers, just pots of lard bubbling on the stoves of a small, immaculately clean kitchen. It is the ideal expression of New Orleans' long love affair with our fresh Gulf oysters.
All the seafood, from fried shrimp, trout fillets, to soft-shell crabs (when available) receive the same light breading of corn flour, and all are cooked with expertise. Real Yats sometimes dig into a plate of red gravy with spaghetti and either daube or meatballs, but you're here for the seafood. The gumbo is every bit the rival of the absolutely fresh raw oysters to start a meal, and fried crab claws are another good option. Have a Barq's, or an Abita Amber with your oyster loaf, and enjoy a beautiful tradition that has sustained generations of happy oyster eaters.
